At School of Popular Music, offering music lessons in Guernsey, we understand that every musician plays an important role in a band. And while frontmen and guitarists get most of the glory in rock/metal bands, drummers are very much the driving force behind the music. There are a number of fantastic metal drummers, yet the ones which made our list boast a combination of technical skill, stage presence and attitude – because being technical alone doesn’t make someone cool!
1. Joey Jordison (Ex Slipknot)
Jordison’s love for drums began when he found a drum kit at his grandfather’s house at the age of 5, and has since established himself as a reference in the world of drumming, particularly in the metal scene. He’s arguably one of the fastest drummers in the world, showcasing amazing speed and control over his hands and feet. He blasts double bass in a freakishly aerobic manner and was one of the only musicians playing double bass like that back when Slipknot started, making him one of the millennium’s most influential drummers.
2. Lars Ulrich (Metallica)
Ulrich is one of the controversial musicians in metal, with opinions about his skill tending to lie on both extremes of the spectrum. Some have even gone as far as to call him a terrible drummer. Although he’s certainly not the most technical metal drummers, when has technical skill alone made for good music or sold-out concerts? When people watch Metallica live, they want to be blown away by powerful music and electric energy, and the Dane is a main contributor to that.
What Ulrich lacks in the level of speed and technical ability other drummers on this list possess, he makes up for with his attitude on stage, by giving it all he’s got (facial expressions and all). Many have come to his defence and argued that part of his skill lies in his incredible willpower to resist overplaying and putting what’s best for the song before his own ego.
3. Vinnie Paul (Ex-Pantera)
Vinnie Paul echoes these exact thoughts; ‘A lot of these drummers play so much that it’s not about the song anymore, it’s like a show-off session….to me, I always felt like drums have to be the support and driving factor in a song, and there’s places where the drummer has to show off and do things and get the spotlight, but not all the time.’
Known for his precise double kickdrum footwork, the former Pantera drummer is incredibly versatile, having the ability to play anything from ballads to break neck blast beats. His great timing, technical knowledge and characteristic bandannas have earned him a place on our list.
